Window film is one of the most versatile upgrades you can make to your home or office windows. From blocking UV rays to enhancing privacy and safety, window film offers a lot of benefits, but it also comes with a lot of questions. We have gathered the most common questions and answered them so you can make an informed decision.
1. What is window film and how does it work?
Window film is a thin, durable polyester layer applied directly to your glass. Depending on your needs, window film can:
- Reduce heat and glare
- Block harmful UV rays
- Improve privacy
- Strengthen glass for safety and security
No matter which type of film you choose, it allows you to transform your space without replacing your windows.
2. How long does window film last, and can it be removed?
High-quality window film can last up to 20 years (or more)! If your needs change, professional installers can remove it cleanly, leaving your glass intact.
3. How long does installation take?
U.S. Film Crew specializes in quick, non-disruptive installations so your facility or home can continue its day-to-day activities without interruption. Installation time depends on the size and complexity of the project. For example, projects with walk-up access to the glass, non-security films, and a scope of 60 windows or fewer can typically be completed in one day. Projects that require coordinated access to the glass (such as lifts or scaffolding), include 60 or more windows, or involve thicker films like security film may span multiple days.
At U.S. Film Crew, your Account Manager or our Director of Installation can provide an estimated installation timeline tailored to your specific project.
4. Is window film installed on the inside or outside?
Most window films are installed on the interior surface of the glass, offering high performance while protecting the window film from weather and extending its lifespan.
Exterior installation is recommended in specific situations, such as when the glass is not accessible from the interior (for example, spandrel glass), when exterior glare must be controlled, or when the highest level of heat or glare reduction is required before solar energy has the chance to pass through a glazing (glass) system.
Exterior window film does standardly include a manufacturer’s warranty; however, the warranty period is typically shorter than that of an interior application.
5. Does privacy window film work at night?
Yes. Frosted and decorative films provide 24/7 privacy.
Reflective films (commonly referred to as “one-way mirror” films) rely on a stronger light source on one side of the glass to maintain their privacy effect. With sufficient exterior lighting at night, reflective films can provide nighttime privacy. However, without exterior lighting, turning on interior lights after dark can reduce or eliminate the privacy effect.

6. Can window film stop break-ins or active threats?
Security window films are designed to hold glass together if it breaks, reducing injuries from airborne glass shards and helping to slow forced entry. While security window film improves safety and security, it is important to note that it is not bulletproof.
When properly installed and attached, security window film can provide valuable additional response time, allowing occupants to seek safety, contact first responders, delay intruders, and reduce overall damage.
Security window film is an effective and often more affordable solution for organizations seeking enhanced protection while minimizing disruption, downtime, and construction costs.
7. Does window film really reduce heat?
Yes. High-quality solar control window films can block up to 80 percent of solar heat, reducing hot spots near windows and lowering strain on your HVAC system. All high-quality solar window films block over 99 percent of harmful UV rays, protecting your skin and preventing fading of furniture, carpets, and artwork.
8. Does window film stop screen glare on computers and TVs?
Yes. Window film is highly effective at reducing screen glare on computers, TVs, and other digital displays. By minimizing harsh sunlight and diffused glare entering through the glass, window film improves screen visibility and reduces eye strain without requiring you to add blinds or close off your view to the outdoors.
9. How do you maintain or clean window film?
To keep your window film looking its best:
- Use soft cloths and non-abrasive cleaners
- Avoid ammonia-based products, which can damage the film
With proper care, your window film will continue to perform beautifully for years.
Is Window Film Right for You?
If you’re looking to reduce excessive glare or heat, block harmful UV rays, enhance privacy, or improve security on vulnerable glass, window film is likely the right solution.
Whether your goal is greater comfort, privacy, safety, or energy efficiency, window film offers a cost-effective way to transform your space. Speaking with a professional can help you determine the best type of film for your windows and your specific needs.
